Office Furniture Prices in 2026: Factory Prices Keep Climbing While Retail Desks Get Cheaper

US makers are charging about 4 percent more for office furniture each year, while the consumer price index for desks keeps falling. Here is the price trail, the tariff calendar and who should buy now.

Ask whether office furniture is getting more expensive and the answer depends on which price you look at. The Bureau of Labor Statistics producer price index for office furniture manufacturing, which tracks what US makers charge, reached a preliminary 223.0 in August 2026, which by our calculation is 4.0 percent above a year earlier. The consumer price index for “other furniture,” the category where BLS prices desks and bookcases, fell 1.9 percent over the same year.

Tariffs, an industry merger and a Supreme Court ruling all touched the market between October 2025 and February 2026. Here is how the price trail breaks down, and what it means for someone about to buy a desk or a chair.

Producer prices up about 4 percent a year, retail desk prices down

By our calculation from BLS index levels, the producer price index for office furniture manufacturing rose 4.0 percent in the year to August 2026 and about 12 percent over three years, while BLS reported the consumer price index for other furniture, which prices desks, down 1.9 percent over the same year.

Two indexes moving in opposite directions

The producer index is steady rather than dramatic. It stood at 199.5 in August 2023, 205.3 in August 2024, 214.5 in August 2025 and a preliminary 223.0 in August 2026, an increase of about 12 percent over three years by our calculation. The narrower index for office furniture made from materials other than wood also rose 4.0 percent in the latest year, by the same method.

At the register the direction flips. The CPI for other furniture fell from 80.3 in August 2023 to 74.2 in August 2026, a drop of about 7.6 percent by our math that includes the 1.9 percent decline in the latest year. BLS lists desks alongside bookcases, entertainment centers, bar stools and ottomans in that category, so it is the closest official reading of what households pay for home office furniture. It does not isolate office chairs.

Makers are charging more each year; the retail price of desks has been falling for three years.

What is pushing manufacturer prices up

The indexes do not explain themselves, but the policy record lines up with the producer side. A 25 percent Section 232 tariff has applied to certain imported upholstered wooden products since October 14, 2025, along with kitchen cabinets and vanities. On December 31, 2025, the White House delayed scheduled increases by a year; under the schedule set that day, the upholstered rate rises to 30 percent, and the cabinet and vanity rate to 50 percent, on January 1, 2027.

The broader tariffs of 2025 took a different path. In February 2026 the Supreme Court ruled 6–3 in Learning Resources v. Trump that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not authorize them, and a Court of International Trade judge later directed the government to pay refunds with interest. Logitech, for one, booked $61 million of tariff refunds in its April–June 2026 quarter. The administration answered with an across-the-board tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which the law limits to 150 days. The furniture duty rests on Section 232, a different statute, and was not part of that case.

The industry also consolidated. HNI Corporation completed its acquisition of Steelcase on December 10, 2025, creating a company with pro forma annual revenue of $5.8 billion that now owns Steelcase brands including Coalesse, Designtex, Smith System and Orangebox. We would not expect fewer, larger contract makers to cut list prices, though the merger is too recent to read in the index.

Why retail desks got cheaper

The consumer index measures a different market. It tracks what households pay in stores and online, not what manufacturers charge their customers, and for desks and similar pieces that price has drifted down in each August-to-August comparison since 2023: 80.3, then 75.8, 75.6 and 74.2.

Retail demand has not collapsed. MillerKnoll, which reports a separate retail segment, said on June 24, 2026 that Global Retail sales rose 5.9 percent to $1.11 billion in its 2026 fiscal year, a little faster than its North America Contract segment at 4.9 percent. Its fourth-quarter orders fell 6.3 percent, which the company tied mainly to $55 million to $60 million of North American contract orders that had been pulled forward a year earlier.

Put together, the data describe a split market. Increases have stuck on the manufacturing side, which includes the contract makers that sell to businesses. At retail, where shoppers compare listings side by side, prices for desks and similar furniture have slipped for three years running.

Where a chair or desk purchase fits the calendar

The one dated risk is the Section 232 schedule. If the increase to 30 percent takes effect on January 1, 2027 as currently set, imported upholstered wooden pieces face a higher duty than they do in the fall of 2026. The duty is written for certain upholstered wooden products, so a wood-framed upholstered chair is more exposed than an all-metal mesh task chair. The White House has already postponed the increase once, so the date can move again.

For manufacturer-priced chairs, the producer index gives no sign of a pause: it has risen in every August-to-August comparison since 2023, by 2.9, 4.5 and 4.0 percent by our calculation. Waiting for list prices to fall has not worked; waiting for a retailer’s sale on the same model is a different bet.

For budget desks, shelving and similar pieces, the consumer index says patience has been rewarded so far, though it reports what happened, not what will.

Who should buy now and who can wait

Buy now if you need a chair for full-day seated work and have settled on a manufacturer-priced model. The producer trend has run at about 4 percent a year, and if the model is imported and wood-framed, the scheduled tariff step gives a dated reason not to push the purchase past December 2026.

Wait, or shop the sale calendar, if you are furnishing with retail desks, bookcases or budget chairs. The consumer index for that category has fallen in each August-to-August comparison since 2023, and nothing in the tariff schedule has a dated step aimed at it.

Either way, compare warranty length and the stated weight rating, not just the price tag: two chairs at the same price can carry very different coverage.

What to watch next

  • The monthly BLS producer price index for office furniture manufacturing: a flat or falling reading would be the first break in the three-year climb
  • Any new proclamation changing the Section 232 wood-products schedule before January 1, 2027
  • HNI and MillerKnoll quarterly reports for price increases and for how HNI prices Steelcase products after the merger

Questions readers ask

Are office chairs getting more expensive in 2026?

At the manufacturer level, yes. The BLS producer price index for office furniture manufacturing rose 4.0 percent from August 2025 to August 2026. BLS does not publish a consumer price index for office chairs alone; its index for other furniture, which includes desks, fell 1.9 percent over the same period.

Do tariffs apply to office furniture?

A 25 percent Section 232 tariff has applied since October 14, 2025 to certain upholstered wooden products, and the rate is scheduled to rise to 30 percent on January 1, 2027 after a one-year delay announced December 31, 2025. The separate IEEPA tariffs of 2025 were struck down by the Supreme Court in February 2026.

Why are desks cheaper while furniture makers raise prices?

The two indexes measure different markets. The producer index tracks what US manufacturers charge; the consumer index tracks what households pay. By our calculation from the BLS index levels, from August 2023 to August 2026 the first rose about 12 percent and the second fell about 7.6 percent.

Did the HNI and Steelcase merger change prices?

It is too early to see in official data. HNI completed the acquisition on December 10, 2025, forming a company with $5.8 billion in pro forma annual revenue, and the producer index has kept its steady rise since then.
