Fragrance was one of the strongest US beauty categories through 2025 and stayed there in 2026, but it is now growing in two different ways at once. At prestige counters, shoppers pay more per bottle and buy about the same number of bottles. In drugstores and mass retailers, more people are buying scent, often in cheaper formats.
That split matters if you are about to buy a bottle, a gift set or a body spray. Here is where prices are heading, which formats are taking share, and how to choose between a full-size eau de parfum and the smaller or lighter options.

Where the price increases are coming from
Circana’s first-half 2026 data shows prestige fragrance dollar sales up 6%, driven by what it calls premiumization rather than more purchases: average prices rose 5% while unit sales were flat. Shoppers traded up to higher-concentration formats, and eau de parfum and perfume grew by double digits. Luxury fragrance grew in both dollars and units, mostly on women’s scents.
The government price index points the same way at a broader level. By our calculation from published index levels, the BLS consumer price index for cosmetics, perfume, bath, nail preparations and implements rose 2.8% between August 2025 and August 2026, after rising 0.3% in the previous twelve months. The climb is concentrated in 2026: the index dipped in late 2025, then rose 3.9% between December 2025 and August 2026. It covers far more than perfume, so it is a backdrop rather than a fragrance price, but the direction turned.
Part of a higher average price is mix, not sticker increases. When more buyers pick a larger or stronger bottle, the average price per unit rises even if no brand changes a list price. Circana does not split its 5% between the two, and neither can we, but its note that shoppers are trading up to higher concentrations suggests mix is a real part of it.
Prestige fragrance is growing on price and mix, not on more bottles sold.
The formats taking share
The volume is in mass retail and smaller sizes. Mass fragrance sales rose 15% in the first half of 2026 with units up 7%, making it the fastest-growing category in mass beauty, per Circana. That extends a 2025 run: BeautyMatter, citing Circana, reported mass fragrance up 17% in the first half of 2025, with Target’s fragrance sales up 34% and drugstores up 13%, and credited dupes and lighter mists.
Minis and sets are the prestige version of the same behavior. Circana named continued momentum in minis as a prestige fragrance driver in the first quarter of 2026. A year earlier, Premium Beauty News reported from Circana data that prestige gift sets grew 45% in the first quarter of 2025, led by mini and travel-size sets. For the holiday quarter, Circana says gift sets typically make up over 25% of prestige fragrance sales and pointed to innovation among mass body spray brands.
Retailers are reallocating space to match. Fragrance accounted for 13% of Ulta Beauty’s net sales in the 26 weeks ended August 1, 2026, up from 11% a year earlier, while cosmetics slipped from 39% to 38%.

How to buy without overpaying
Decide first whether you want a signature scent or variety. If you wear one fragrance daily, a full-size bottle spreads its cost over the most wears, and that is exactly the segment where prestige prices are rising, so buy it when you are sure. If you rotate scents or are still choosing, minis and discovery sets let you test for less money up front, which is a large part of why they keep growing.
Body sprays and mists are the cheapest way into a scent, and Circana singles out mass body spray brands for a rise in innovation. Expect a lighter concentration and shorter wear than an eau de parfum; that is the trade for the price. Dupes, which BeautyMatter tied to mass fragrance growth, sell a similar scent profile under a different name; judge them on concentration and bottle size, not on the name they reference.
Timing matters for sets, which are a holiday business. December accounts for about 60% of fourth-quarter prestige fragrance sales, and gift sets typically make up more than a quarter of that quarter’s sales, per Circana. For a specific full bottle, holiday timing is less relevant than whether the scent is one you already know you wear.
Match the format to how you wear scent: full bottles for a daily signature, minis and sprays for rotation or testing.
Counter-signals and who should wait
Growth that rests on price with flat units tends to hold while shoppers keep trading up and fade when they stop. Circana’s forecast for the 2025 holiday quarter was low-single-digit growth for prestige fragrance, well below the mass pace, and the first-half 2026 unit figure did not move. If prestige units start falling while prices keep rising, that is the first sign of fatigue.
Cheaper formats are not immune. Circana says mass fragrance growth in 2026 came from both higher demand and higher prices, so body sprays and mass scents are getting more expensive too. If you are shopping mass for value, compare price per ounce across a body spray, a rollerball and a small eau de toilette instead of assuming the spray is cheapest.
Who should wait: anyone planning a gift set in September, since sets are built for the holiday quarter, when their sales typically spike. Who should not: if your signature scent is a prestige eau de parfum, nothing in the 2026 data suggests its average price is heading down.
