E Ink writing tablets have long sat in a niche next to laptops and iPads. Between September 2025 and May 2026 two of the brands selling them in the US widened their lineups. Amazon relaunched the Kindle Scribe as three models, including its first color Scribe, and reMarkable added both a compact color notebook and a cheaper entry model.
The pitch has shifted too. Feature lists now read like study tools, with searchable handwritten notes and PDF import from cloud drives, reMarkable runs back-to-school promotions, and the case for writing by hand leans on brain research. The products are real; the evidence that they raise grades is thinner than the marketing suggests.

More models, cheaper entry versions and back-to-school promotions
Amazon split the Kindle Scribe into three models priced $429.99 to $629.99, unveiled in September 2025 and on sale from December 2025, and reMarkable added a $449 compact color model in September 2025 and a $399 entry model in May 2026, then ran a $100 back-to-school discount in August 2026. The launch announcements give no unit sales, which caps the score.

What changed in the lineups

Amazon unveiled its redesigned Kindle Scribe family on September 30, 2025, and on December 4 set the on-sale dates. TechCrunch reported three versions: a Kindle Scribe with a front light at $499.99 and a Kindle Scribe Colorsoft at $629.99, both available December 10, and a Kindle Scribe without a front light at $429.99 for early 2026. Amazon describes the new Scribe as an 11-inch glare-free device, 5.4mm thin and 400g, with 40% faster writing and page turns; the Colorsoft adds 10 pen colors and 5 highlighter colors.
reMarkable moved at both ends. On September 3, 2025 it launched the Paper Pro Move, a 7.3-inch notebook with its Canvas Color display, at $449 with a Marker or $499 with a Marker Plus, and up to two weeks of battery life. On May 6, 2026 it announced the Paper Pure, a 10.3-inch black-and-white slate at $399 with a Marker or $449 with a Marker Plus and folio, rated for up to three weeks per charge, with first shipments in early June. The company said the reMarkable 2 will be discontinued.

| reMarkable Paper Pure | 10.3-inch, black and white | $399 with Marker | May 2026 |
The category now spans a pocketable color notebook, two sizes of monochrome slate and an 11-inch color Scribe.
Why students are the target
The software now reads like a study-tool spec sheet. Amazon lists AI-powered notebook search that returns summaries across notebooks, import and export through Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, and a Workspace view that keeps documents, notebooks and books in one folder. reMarkable’s Paper Pro Move release highlights handwriting search that finds any note in seconds.
The marketing calendar says the same thing. On August 3, 2026 reMarkable announced $100 off Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move bundles for “students, professionals and lifelong learners,” pitching the devices for lecture notes and coursework as people start university or return to the classroom.
One study behind the handwriting argument is a Frontiers in Psychology paper published January 26, 2024. Researchers analyzed 256-channel EEG from 36 university students as they wrote words with a digital pen on a touchscreen or typed them on a keyboard, and found far more elaborate connectivity patterns during handwriting, which the authors link to memory formation. It measured brain activity, not grades, and the authors say the right tool depends on what is being learned.
The study supports handwriting as a practice; it does not show that any particular tablet improves test scores.
What you pay beyond the tablet
The sticker price is only part of the cost. reMarkable sells some features, including handwriting search, document conversion and sharing to Slack and Miro, through its Connect subscription. The price in its releases rose between launches: $2.99 a month after a 100-day free trial in the September 2025 Paper Pro Move release, and $3.99 a month or $39 a year after a 50-day trial in the May 2026 Paper Pure release.
Pen choice also moves the price. Both reMarkable models are sold in bundles that differ by $50 depending on the Marker, and the Paper Pure’s upper bundle adds a folio. On the Amazon side, the $70 gap between the front-lit and unlit Kindle Scribe is what the front light costs.
Where the case gets weaker
Some features depend on geography or other services. Amazon says sending notes and documents to Alexa+ for a conversation about them is U.S. only, and reMarkable’s Paper Pure release lists meeting notes, handwriting search and AI-powered sharing among Connect subscription features.
The trend data is also thin. None of the announcements cited here gives unit sales for these devices, so the evidence for growth is the number of models, the price points and the marketing aimed at students rather than shipment counts. We score the trend as rising on that basis, with the caveat that a lineup expansion is a bet on demand, not proof of it.
Who should buy now and who should wait
Buy now if you already handwrite notes, annotate a lot of PDFs and want one device that holds both, and if a back-to-school or holiday discount lands the price near the $399 to $449 entry models. Check which features need a subscription before you compare prices.
Wait if color is the reason to buy. Color E Ink is still the premium tier, with the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft at $629.99 against $429.99 for the unlit monochrome Scribe. Students whose coursework runs on video or web apps will still need a laptop or conventional tablet alongside an E Ink slate.
What to watch next
- Holiday pricing on the three Kindle Scribe models against their $429.99 to $629.99 launch prices
- Whether reMarkable changes Connect pricing again after the move from $2.99 to $3.99 a month between its September 2025 and May 2026 launches
- New research that measures grades or test results, not only brain activity, for handwritten notes on tablets
