Skincare taught shoppers to buy targeted serums instead of one all-purpose cream. In 2026 hair care is getting the same treatment. Circana’s first-half data put prestige hair care among the fastest-growing US beauty categories, with sales up 11%, units up 8% and serums up nearly 60%.
The shift shows in retailers’ sales mix and in big-company earnings, and it comes with a crowded, loosely labeled online shelf. Here is what the data shows, why serums in particular, and how to shop the category.

What the sales data shows

Prestige hair care sales rose 11% in the first six months of 2026 and units grew 8%, Circana reported in August 2026, with treatments driving growth and serums up nearly 60%. Unit growth that close to dollar growth means more people are buying, not just paying more per bottle. That is the opposite of prestige fragrance in the same report, where average prices rose 5% and units were flat.
The first quarter already showed the pattern. Circana said prestige hair was the fastest-growing category by dollars in the first quarter of 2026 and a top unit driver, second only to skincare, fueled by continued strength in treatments. Retail Dive’s coverage of the first-half figures also highlighted the near-60% serum gain.
Mass is a different picture. Mass-retail hair care dollar sales rose 7% in the first half of 2026 while units dipped, which Circana tied partly to shoppers looking for value, and in the first quarter Circana’s standout in mass was double-digit growth in shampoo and conditioner combo packs. The serum boom is a prestige story first.
Prestige hair care is adding buyers, and serums are its fastest-growing part.
Why serums, and why now
Retailers are giving hair more room. Haircare made up 20% of Ulta Beauty’s net sales in the quarter ended August 1, 2026, up from 19% a year earlier, while cosmetics slipped from 38% to 37%.
Manufacturers are leaning into treatment claims. Unilever said its hair care business grew high-single digits in the first half of 2026; Dove grew double digits led by premium innovations including a repair technology range, and its ultra-premium brand K18 delivered very strong double-digit growth on what the company calls biotechnology-led innovations. Procter & Gamble reported mid-single-digit organic hair care growth for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, citing volume growth in Asia Pacific and Europe and pricing in Latin America and Asia Pacific.
Our read on the why: serums sit where skincare habits and hair routines overlap. They are leave-in, used in small amounts and easy to add without changing shampoo, and they give brands a format for targeted claims such as repair, frizz control or shine at a higher price per ounce than conditioner. That is an editorial reading of the data, not something Circana measured.
The serum shelf is crowded and loosely labeled
On marketplaces, products labeled hair serum range from silicone shine drops to leave-in repair treatments to growth products that contain minoxidil. The name on the bottle tells you little; the ingredient panel tells you what you are buying.
The growth products have run into federal packaging rules. Between August 2025 and April 2026, the CPSC announced six recalls of minoxidil hair and beard growth sprays and serums that turn up in a search of its SaferProducts.gov database, covering about 100,000 units in total by our count, because the bottles were not child-resistant as the Poison Prevention Packaging Act requires. One, the Tomum spray, sold about 27,400 bottles on Amazon at about $20 each between March and September 2025.
Growth products are a separate category from the styling and treatment serums behind Circana’s numbers, and whether one suits you is a question for a doctor, not a shopping guide. If you are shopping for a styling or repair serum, a listing that includes minoxidil is not the product you are looking for.
Read the ingredient panel before the product name: serum can mean shine drops, a treatment or a growth product.
How to shop the category and who should wait
Start with the job. For frizz and shine, a few drops of a lightweight serum on the ends is the classic use. For regular blow-drying or flat-ironing, look for a serum that states heat protection on the label. For hair damaged by bleaching or coloring, repair treatments are the segment Unilever’s results point to as growing.
Compare price per ounce, not bottle price. Serums are sold in small bottles across a wide price range, and a category adding buyers this quickly is full of first-time shoppers who have not yet compared sizes.
Who should wait: if a conditioner and a heat protectant already handle your hair, a serum is an add-on rather than a fix, and in our view a category growing this fast is likely to see more launches and promotions. Who should buy: people with frizz, dry ends or chemically treated hair who want a leave-in step targeted at that problem.
