The mattress business is in a slump. Somnigroup chief executive Scott Thompson said the industry “remained at record lows” in 2025, and second-quarter 2026 results from Somnigroup and Purple Innovation show soft demand continuing into the summer.
You might expect a slump to bring discounts. This one comes with consolidation instead. The company behind Tempur Sealy and the Mattress Firm chain has absorbed Leggett & Platt, which it calls a leading supplier of bedding components, and it raised prices after the second quarter to cover higher input costs.

Demand is soft while Somnigroup buys its way up the supply chain
Somnigroup’s CEO said the mattress industry stayed at record lows in 2025, its North America sales fell 5.7% in Q2 2026, and Purple cut its 2026 revenue guidance to $420 million to $440 million from $500 million to $520 million.

An industry at record lows

Somnigroup’s headline numbers hide the weakness because of acquisitions. Its 2025 net sales jumped 51.6% to $7,476.5 million, largely because it bought Mattress Firm on February 5, 2025, which contributed $3,505.4 million in sales. Underneath, its chief executive described an industry at record lows, and the company listed consumer confidence and the availability of consumer financing among the risks to its outlook.
The second quarter of 2026 shows the same pressure. Somnigroup’s total net sales fell 3.0% to $1,823.5 million. Its North America segment fell 5.7% to $601.8 million, which the company said was affected by market conditions. Mattress Firm’s sales fell 2.8% to $922.2 million, mainly because of store closures, although its same-store sales were up slightly.
Purple Innovation, a smaller maker, is feeling it more. Its 2025 revenue fell 3.9% to $468.7 million. In the second quarter of 2026, revenue fell 6.5% to $98.3 million and wholesale revenue fell 19.1% to $37.4 million. Citing “continued softness in the category, particularly in wholesale,” Purple lowered its 2026 revenue guidance to $420 million to $440 million, from the $500 million to $520 million it had forecast in March.
One company, from components to checkout
Somnigroup has spent the downturn integrating vertically. After buying Mattress Firm in February 2025, it announced on April 13, 2026 an all-stock deal for Leggett & Platt, which it described as a key supplier and a leading supplier of bedding components and solutions. The combination closed on August 26, 2026, in a transaction valued at about $2.3 billion that left former Leggett shareholders with about 9% of the combined company.
The integration already shows up in the accounting. In the first quarter of 2026, Somnigroup’s North America sales fell 20.2%, which it attributed mainly to the accounting elimination of sales to Mattress Firm, now part of the same company. Mattress Firm’s gross margin in that quarter was pressured by investments in promotional expenses.
For rival brands, the Leggett deal is the one to watch. In 2025 Somnigroup accounted for only 7% of Leggett & Platt’s net sales, so most of the supplier’s business came from other customers. The deal announcement did not say how those customers will be supplied.
The mattress story in 2026 is less about new foams or coils than about who owns the factory, the brand and the store.
What prices are doing
The official price data show no spike yet. The BLS bedroom furniture index, which includes mattresses and foundations along with other bedroom furniture, rose 0.1% in the 12 months to August 2025, climbed 3.7% in the 12 months to February 2026, and was down 0.5% in the 12 months to August 2026. The broader furniture and bedding index went from 4.7% to 4.2% to -0.8% over the same three readings.
The companies point the other way. Somnigroup said that after the second quarter ended it implemented price increases designed to reflect higher costs for key production inputs, so the August index may not capture them yet. Purple’s gross margin rose to 45.2% in the second quarter, primarily because of a $5.3 million tariff refund, a one-time lift rather than a lower cost base.
| CPI category | 12 mo. to Aug 2025 | 12 mo. to Feb 2026 | 12 mo. to Aug 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom furniture (includes mattresses) | 0.1% | 3.7% | -0.5% |
| Furniture and bedding | 4.7% | 4.2% | -0.8% |
| Living room, kitchen and dining room furniture | 9.5% | 4.4% | -0.8% |
How to shop a soft market
Soft demand gives shoppers some leverage on the sales floor even when list prices rise. Mattress Firm’s promotional spending is one sign of it. Another is where buyers go: Purple’s showroom revenue grew 16.6% in the second quarter while its e-commerce revenue fell 1.4%, a hint that more buyers want to lie on a mattress before paying for it.
We read the mix as favoring buyers who can wait for promotions and who test in person. If your mattress is merely uncomfortable rather than broken down, a topper is the low-cost way to buy time while the price data catch up with the new list prices.
- Compare the same model across retailers; Mattress Firm now sits inside the same company as Tempur Sealy.
- Ask about the trial period and return pickup cost before comparing prices.
- Check whether a quote reflects the price increase Somnigroup put in after June 2026.
What to watch next
- Somnigroup’s third-quarter 2026 results, the first with Leggett & Platt inside, for how the price increase affects volume
- Purple’s wholesale revenue, for whether the 19.1% decline narrows or spreads to its showrooms
- The monthly BLS bedroom furniture index, for whether the post-June price increases show up

Questions readers ask
Are mattress prices going up in 2026?
The BLS bedroom furniture index, which includes mattresses, was down 0.5% in the 12 months to August 2026. Somnigroup, which owns Tempur Sealy and Mattress Firm, said it implemented price increases after its second quarter ended to reflect higher input costs.
Who owns Mattress Firm?
Somnigroup International, the parent of Tempur Sealy, acquired Mattress Firm on February 5, 2025.
Why are mattress sales down?
The companies do not give one cause. Somnigroup’s CEO said the industry stayed at record lows in 2025, and the company lists consumer confidence and the availability of consumer financing among its risks. Purple cited continued softness in the category, particularly in wholesale.
What is Leggett & Platt, and why does the merger matter?
Somnigroup describes Leggett & Platt as a leading supplier of bedding components and solutions. The two combined on August 26, 2026. In 2025 Somnigroup accounted for 7% of Leggett & Platt’s net sales, so most of its business was with other customers.
