The rowing machine is the only home cardio format that works the whole body while taking up the floor plan of a sofa, and in 2026 the demand has split cleanly in two. The rising searches are for compact, foldable and magnetic machines. The shrinking business is premium connected hardware, and Peloton’s own quarterly filing says so.
We have not tested any of these machines. What follows reads the published specifications from the makers, one federal recall notice and one quarterly earnings release, and puts them against the queries buyers are actually typing. The pattern is consistent: the resistance type is a smaller decision than the amount of room the thing needs.

What the search data moved toward
Over the 12 months to October 12, 2026, the rising related queries around rowing machines in the United States were dominated by qualifiers rather than brands: compact rowing machine at +170%, magnetic rowing machine at +160%, foldable rowing machine at +120% and indoor rowing machine at +110%. Amazon search autocomplete on the same day returned rowing machine home foldable alongside rowing machine home gym and rowing machine home cardio.
Those are storage words. They describe someone measuring a room rather than comparing stroke feel, and the compact machines are specified to match: upright storage and a magnetic brake on one published example, against a 96-inch air machine that separates into two parts.
The brand-level rising queries mostly point the same way, led by named magnetic and water machines, though one smart rower query climbed too. What is absent is growth in premium connected hardware at the company that reports it quarterly.
Rowing demand is not rising as a whole. The searches at the compact end are.
The footprint is the whole category
Concept2 publishes the reference numbers for an air rower: 96 inches long, 24 inches wide, a 54-inch monorail, and an assembled space of 8 feet by 2 feet that becomes 9 feet by 4 feet once you add clearance to use it. The machine separates into two parts for storage, at 25 by 33 by 54 inches with standard legs, weighs 57 pounds, and carries a published maximum user weight of 500 pounds under the company’s own testing or 300 pounds under the European standard EN 20957-7.
A magnetic machine shortens that. Sunny Health and Fitness publishes dimensions of 78.6 by 30.5 by 39.3 inches for its 16-level magnetic rower, with upright storage and a 330-pound maximum user weight. The length difference is about a foot and a half, which is the difference between a rower that fits across the end of a bed and one that does not.
Two numbers decide whether any of this works in your room. The first is the length plus the clearance behind the flywheel and in front of the seat. The second is the inseam the rail supports, which Concept2 states as a 38-inch threshold for its extra-long monorail.
- Assembled length and width, then the clearance figure if the maker publishes one
- Stored dimensions, and whether storage means folding, splitting in two or standing it upright
- Maximum user weight, and whether the figure is the maker’s own test or a standards figure
- Rail length or supported inseam, which decides the stroke you actually get
Why the premium connected rower stopped leading
Peloton reports its home connected fitness business every quarter, and the quarter ended June 30, 2026 is blunt. Connected Fitness Products revenue was $171.1 million, down 14% year over year, against subscription revenue of $436.6 million. Total revenue was $607.7 million, barely changed. Hardware ran a 13.4% gross margin while subscriptions ran 73.6%, and ending paid connected fitness subscriptions fell by 247,000 to 2.553 million, a decline of 8.8%. Full-year revenue was $2.446 billion. We read that as hardware becoming the cost of acquiring a subscriber rather than the business, and our earlier look at whether a Peloton is worth it in 2026 covers what that means for an owner.
The screen also brings its own failure mode. On October 16, 2025, iFIT recalled about 44,800 NordicTrack rowing machines sold in the United States between November 2018 and April 2022, because the screen console could overheat and ignite. The notice lists eight incidents including two reports of fire, six reports of smoking or melting and at least $6,000 in property damage, with no injuries reported, and the remedy was a technician visit to replace the console.
A machine whose console is its most expensive component and its only recalled component is a different proposition from one whose monitor runs on two D cells. That is not an argument against connected rowers, but it is the reason the rising queries are not naming them.
The money in connected fitness moved to subscriptions. The hardware demand moved to machines that store themselves.
Resistance type decides noise, feel and upkeep
Air machines pull a flywheel through air, so resistance rises with effort and the sound rises with it. The Concept2 drive is a nickel-plated steel chain and the monitor draws power from the flywheel while you row, with two D cells as backup. There is no resistance setting to tune, which is why this format is the one used for comparing scores.
Magnetic machines brake a flywheel with magnets at a set level, published as 16 levels on the Sunny machine. The resistance does not climb with stroke rate, which makes the feel steadier and the noise lower, and it is the format most of the folding and upright-storage designs use. Water machines spin paddles in a tank, which buys the air-style response in a taller object that needs filling.
If the machine is going in a shared wall or an upstairs room, the quieter brake is worth more than the stroke fidelity, and the same logic we set out for under-desk treadmills in apartments applies here. If you are training for a measured time or distance, the air machine is the one with a common reference.
| Published spec | Air reference machine | Magnetic example |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | 96 in | 78.6 in |
| Overall width | 24 in | 30.5 in |
| Resistance settings | None, effort sets it | 16 levels |
| Maximum user weight | 500 lb maker test, 300 lb EN 20957-7 | 330 lb |
| Storage | Splits into two parts | Upright storage |
Who should buy now, and what would change our read
Buy now if the measurements work. The folding and upright designs are the ones drawing the searches, and our read is that the late-October discount window is the realistic chance of a better price, with the BLS consumer price index for sports equipment up 3.5% in the year to August 2026. Measure the length, the clearance and the stored footprint before anything else, then check the maximum user weight and the supported inseam, then pick the brake.
Wait if your plan depends on a screen. Subscription-attached hardware is the part of the market in retreat, the one rower recall a product-name search of the CPSC database returns is a console fire hazard, and a tablet holder plus your own phone does the same job with no console to replace. Anyone kitting out a room should also price the floor: our notes on gym flooring costs and home gym equipment prices cover what sits under the machine, and at-home HYROX training covers the event format that put rowers back in living rooms.
What to watch next
- Peloton quarterly Connected Fitness Products revenue, for whether the hardware decline steepens or stabilizes
- New CPSC entries for rowing machines, where console and frame failures would appear first
- Whether makers start publishing folded dimensions as standard, since several still publish only assembled sizes

Foldable magnetic rowing machine
Where to look: Amazon
The format behind the rising compact and foldable searches. One maker publishes 78.6 inches long with upright storage and a 330-pound user limit, which is the trade for a foot and a half of floor.
- Shorter than an air rower
- Set resistance levels are quieter
- Folded sizes are often unpublished
- Lower published user weight limits
Air-resistance rowing machine
Where to look: Amazon
Published at 96 by 24 inches, splitting into two parts at 25 by 33 by 54 inches for storage. Effort sets the resistance, which is why this is the machine used for comparing times.
- Common reference for scores
- Monitor runs on D cells
- Needs 9 feet by 4 feet to use
- Louder as effort rises
Equipment mat for a rower
Where to look: Amazon
A mat is the cheapest part of the setup and the one most often bought twice. Measure the machine first, since the published rower lengths here run from 78.6 to 96 inches.
- Protects the floor under the rail
- Easy to roll up
- Adds height under the seat
- Sizes rarely match the machine

Questions readers ask
How much room does a rowing machine need?
Concept2 publishes 96 inches by 24 inches assembled for the RowErg, or 8 feet by 2 feet, and 9 feet by 4 feet with clearance to use it. A 16-level magnetic machine from Sunny Health and Fitness is published at 78.6 by 30.5 by 39.3 inches with upright storage.
What does compact actually mean on a rower listing?
It is not a defined term. Check the assembled length, the stored dimensions and whether storage means folding, splitting into two parts or standing the machine upright, because several makers publish only assembled sizes.
Is connected rowing hardware in decline?
At Peloton, which reports quarterly, yes. Peloton reported Connected Fitness Products revenue of $171.1 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, down 14% year over year at a 13.4% gross margin, with paid connected fitness subscriptions down 247,000 to 2.553 million.
Have rowing machines been recalled?
A product-name search of the CPSC database returns one entry. On October 16, 2025, iFIT recalled about 44,800 NordicTrack rowing machines sold in the US because the screen console could overheat and ignite, citing eight incidents including two fires and no injuries.
Magnetic or air resistance?
Air resistance rises with your effort and has no setting, which is why it is used for comparing scores. Magnetic resistance is set by level, published as 16 levels on the Sunny machine, and is the format used by most folding and upright-storage designs.
