Computer Accessory Prices Turned Up in 2026: Reading the CPI Before You Buy a Second Screen

The official index covering computers and peripherals fell for nine years, then turned up sharply in 2026. What the BLS series shows, and what a portable monitor actually is.

Portable monitors are a demand story and now a price story at once. We pulled Amazon’s completions for portable monitor on October 12, 2026 and got ten, including portable monitor 4k, portable monitor touchscreen and portable monitor stand. Google Trends rising related queries for the same prefix in this wave include portable gaming monitor up 450 percent, dell portable monitor up 120 percent and acer 15.6 portable monitor up 80 percent. Meanwhile the official index that covers this shelf has done something it had not done in nine years.

We have tested nothing and quote no store prices. Every figure below comes from a Bureau of Labor Statistics series we pulled from the BLS public API, a manufacturer specification page, a standards body page, or a company results release. Percentage changes marked as ours are arithmetic on the published index values. Method: how we track trends.

A nine-year price slide reversed, and the reversal is in the official index

The BLS consumer price index for computers, peripherals and smart home assistants read 38.020 in August 2026, up 12.7 percent from its December 2025 low of 33.730 by our calculation, and level with its November 2022 reading. The index had fallen 22.4 percent from January 2017 to that low.

The index that covers this aisle, and what it did

The series to watch is the Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index titled “Computers, peripherals, and smart home assistants in U.S. city average, all urban consumers, not seasonally adjusted”, on a December 2007 equals 100 base. It is the official measure covering the shelf a portable monitor sits on, and it has spent most of a decade falling.

The numbers make the turn plain. The index stood at 43.475 in January 2017 and fell to 33.730 in December 2025, a drop of 22.4 percent by our calculation. Then it reversed: 34.773 in January 2026, 35.406 in June, 36.641 in July and 38.020 in August. That is 12.7 percent above the December low and 8.4 percent above August 2025, both our arithmetic on the published values, and 7.4 percent of it arrived in the two months from June to August.

For a sense of where that leaves prices, the August 2026 reading of 38.020 is the same figure the series printed in November 2022. Roughly three and a half years of decline in this category has been given back.

This is not a rumor about prices; it is the federal index for the category turning up in print.

A second series says the same thing from the factory side

Retail indexes can move for reasons that have nothing to do with manufacturing, so it is worth checking a producer series. The BLS producer price index for electronic computer manufacturing, which the agency labels “PPI industry data for Electronic computer mfg, not seasonally adjusted”, read 100.225 in August 2025 and 103.125 in August 2026 — up 2.9 percent by our calculation, with most of that arriving in July and August 2026.

A third BLS series, “Computer software and accessories”, moved far harder: 22.427 in August 2025 against 28.131 in August 2026, up 25.4 percent by our arithmetic. We flag that one carefully, because the category name mixes software with accessories and the index is on a December 1997 base, so it is a directional signal rather than an accessory price tag.

Read together, the three series point the same way with different force: consumer prices in this aisle up 8.4 percent year over year, factory prices up 2.9 percent, and the accessories-and-software line up far more. The gap between the consumer and producer figures is not something the BLS series explain, and we are not going to guess at it.

What a portable monitor actually is, in published numbers

The category is narrower than the marketing suggests. ASUS publishes, for its 15.6-inch model, an IPS panel at 1920 by 1080 in 16:9, typical brightness of 250 nits, a single USB-C port described as DP Alt Mode and USB 3.2, power consumption of 6.64W, under 0.5W in power-saving mode, a DC rating of 5V at 3A, and a net weight of 1.98 pounds.

That single-port design is why the standard matters. VESA’s DisplayPort over USB-C page states that the interface carries “video, SuperSpeed USB and power, all on one connector” and up to 100 watts over a single cable, and that an uncompressed 4K 60Hz signal runs with simultaneous USB 3.1 while an uncompressed 5K signal leaves only USB 2.0 alongside it. A 6.64W panel is a small claim on that budget; a 4K panel is a larger one.

Two companion pieces cover the parts a price index cannot. We looked at what the laptop has to supply in portable monitors and laptop power, and at resolution tiers in 5K against 4K. For the desk-bound alternative there is the OLED gaming monitor trend.

What the data does not tell you about the cause

The BLS series carry no explanation. They report what households and factories paid, not why. So the honest version of the why is a pointer at the component layer rather than a causal claim.

One checkable data point sits in a supplier’s own release. Micron reported on September 30, 2026 revenue of $54.23 billion for its fiscal fourth quarter and $133.19 billion for fiscal year 2026, and guided to revenue of $61.5 billion plus or minus $1.5 billion for the following quarter. Those are company figures for a memory maker, not a monitor maker, and they describe a supplier whose output is in the same bill of materials as most of this aisle. We read that as consistent with a tight component market; we cannot read it as proof of one.

The adjacent trail we have already followed is laptops, where the same component question showed up earlier in the year. That is in laptop prices and the memory shortage. If you want the broader consumer-electronics picture, camera prices in 2026 and headphone and speaker prices run on the same kind of index evidence.

The index proves the price move; the supplier release only shows a component market worth watching.

Buy now or wait, on the evidence

Buy now if you were going to buy within the next couple of months anyway. The series has risen in seven of the eight months published in 2026 and gained 7.4 percent in June to August alone by our calculation. Nothing in the three BLS series we pulled points downward.

Wait if you are stretching for a higher tier. The specification that costs money here is resolution, and the demand data shows portable monitor 4k among the ten completions, so that is where the premium is. A 1080p panel at the published 6.64W is the modest end of the category in both price and power draw.

Check the index yourself before you act on this. The BLS releases the consumer price index monthly, and the series identifier is in our sources, so the September and October readings will settle whether August was a spike or a level. One other caution: the series had a missing month in October 2025, so a chart drawn straight through that gap will mislead.

What to watch next

  • The next monthly readings of BLS series CUUR0000SEEE01, which will show whether the August 2026 jump held
  • Whether the producer price index for electronic computer manufacturing keeps climbing after its July and August 2026 move
  • Memory suppliers’ own quarterly revenue and guidance, since those figures sit upstream of this aisle
