Type self cleaning litter box into Amazon and the second completion is for multiple cats. We pulled the prefix on October 12, 2026: ten completions, with for multiple cats and for large cats both sitting above the brand names. Google Trends rising related queries for cat litter box over the same 12 months put electric cat litter box and cat litter box self-cleaning at +350% and smart cat litter box at +250%. The category is being bought by households with more than one cat, which is the hardest version of the job.
We have tested nothing and will not pretend otherwise. This compares what two makers publish on their own pages and in an owner manual we downloaded and extracted, what one federal compliance statement says, a Bureau of Labor Statistics price series, and what the CPSC recall database holds. Our selection rule: widely sold powered litter boxes whose makers publish a specification page or manual we could open, each checked against that database on October 12, 2026. Method: how we track trends.

Demand is multi-cat, and capacity per cat is the number makers leave out
Amazon’s US autocomplete finished the prefix self cleaning litter box ten ways on October 12, 2026, and two of the ten qualify by household size. Whisker publishes a cat count for the Litter-Robot 4; neither of the two connected boxes we read publishes a waste capacity.

What multi-cat buyers are typing
The prefix returned ten completions on October 12, 2026. Two qualify the household — for multiple cats, for large cats — and five qualify the machine: automatic, manual, odor control, bags, enclosure. That split matters, because one query is carrying two different jobs.
The first job is scooping often enough. The second is holding what gets scooped: a box that rakes after every visit still fills its waste trap faster in a two-cat home, and the drawer is where the work lands on the owner.
The multi-cat part of the query is about capacity, not about scooping.
The number that decides a multi-cat box
Whisker is the more specific of the two. Its Litter-Robot 4 page carries the line Multi-cat friendly: one supports up to 4 cats, gives a recommended range of 3-25 lbs, a 15.75-inch square entryway, a 22-by-27-inch footprint and a 24-pound empty weight, and says the unit needs a 2.4 GHz signal with the 5 GHz band not supported.
PetSafe is vaguer by design. Its ScoopFree Crystal Smart page lists family size as single or multi-cat households and compatible litter as ScoopFree Crystal Litter, and tells buyers to change the disposable tray once a month, but it states no cat count and no cat weight limit.
Neither publishes a waste capacity in liters or pounds. Whisker’s page says emptying frequency depends on the number and size of your cats, and that you may only need to do it once every eight days. The PetSafe manual we extracted prints a Recommended Litter Tray Replacement Chart with three rows — 20-30 days, 10-15 days, then 7-10 days — marked with cat icons rather than text, so it describes progressively larger households without naming a count. That is the closest either maker comes to telling a two-cat buyer what to expect.
| Published spec | Litter-Robot 4 | PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Smart |
|---|---|---|
| Cats stated | Up to 4 cats | Single or multi-cat households |
| Cat weight range | 3-25 lbs | Not published |
| Waste capacity | Not published | Not published |
| Litter or tray | Clumping clay recommended | Crystal litter only |
| Wi-Fi band | 2.4 GHz only | 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n |
| Warranty included | 1 year | 1 year limited, per the manual |
What a connected box needs before it works
Both connected boxes are 2.4 GHz devices. Whisker states it outright; the PetSafe manual lists a wireless router at 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n under system requirements. A single-name mesh network that hides the band is the usual reason setup stalls, and it is worth checking before the box arrives rather than after.
The consumables are where the two part company. The PetSafe manual is explicit that only PetSafe ScoopFree disposable crystal litter trays should be used, tells owners not to use any type of clay litter, natural litter or any other crystal litter, and adds that using a different tray or litter may void the product warranty. The warranty itself is a one-year non-transferable limited warranty.
Litter is the line that repeats. The BLS index for pets and pet products rose 1.9 percent in the 12 months to August 2026, which is mild, but a tray-based system fixes you to one supplier. Our separate reporting on cat litter prices in 2026 covers what the litter itself has done.
What the recall record says, and what it does not
We searched the CPSC recall web service on October 12, 2026 for litter box, cat litter and automatic litter. All three returned nothing at all, and the bare term litter returns log splitters and glitter candles, which is what a loose text match does. The broader pet search returned 89 notices, whose pet products are toys, a pet vacuum from 2016, a heated pet mat from 2012 and power adapters sold with heated pet beds from 2010.
We read that as thin evidence rather than a clean bill. Powered litter boxes are a young category, so an empty database mostly tells you that nobody has been recalled yet.
The compliance page in the PetSafe manual is a reminder of what does apply: a part 15 Class B statement from the Federal Communications Commission, the same authorization any radio in a US home needs. The manual also restricts the product to use with cats only and warns against inserting anything while the rake is moving.
One box or two
The two makers answer the central question in opposite ways. Whisker says one Litter-Robot 4 supports up to four cats. PetSafe’s manual, under its advice on maximizing litter tray life, says it is recommended to have more than one litter box for more than one cat. Both statements are published; they do not point the same way.
Our read is that the manual is protecting its own consumable and the product page is describing throughput, and a buyer with two cats should plan for both. Buy the powered box for the scooping and keep a second plain box in a different room, which also gives you somewhere to go when the powered one is being cleaned.
Wait if your router is a single-band mesh you cannot split, if nobody is home for days at a time, or if a tray-based system would tie you to a supplier you cannot get locally.
Treat the cat count on the box as throughput, not as permission to run one box.
What to watch next
- Whether either maker starts publishing a waste capacity in liters, which would end the guessing for two-cat homes
- New CPSC notices naming a powered litter box, at the agency recall database
- Whether the tray-based systems add a clumping-litter option, which would break the single-supplier lock

Automatic self-cleaning litter box
Where to look: Amazon
The powered unit is what the query is after. The checks that matter are the stated cat count, the Wi-Fi band and whether the litter or tray is proprietary.
- Rakes after each visit
- Some makers publish a cat count
- Waste capacity rarely published
- 2.4 GHz networks only
Large covered litter box
Where to look: Amazon
PetSafe’s own manual advises more than one box for more than one cat. A plain covered box is the cheapest way to follow that advice.
- No power or network needed
- Any litter works
- You scoop it
- Takes floor space
Carbon filter refills
Where to look: Amazon
Whisker publishes a sealed drawer with a built-in carbon filter. Filters are the part that gets forgotten, so check the shape before ordering refills.
- Cheap consumable
- Fits sealed drawers
- Needs replacing
- Sizes are not standard

Questions readers ask
Does one self-cleaning litter box work for two cats?
Whisker publishes that one Litter-Robot 4 supports up to 4 cats. PetSafe’s ScoopFree Smart manual, separately, says it is recommended to have more than one litter box for more than one cat. Both are published positions, and they conflict, so a two-cat buyer should read the cat count as throughput rather than as a reason to run a single box.
How often does the waste drawer need emptying in a multi-cat home?
Neither maker publishes a capacity. Whisker says how often you empty the drawer depends on the number and size of your cats, and that you may only need to do it once every eight days. The PetSafe manual prints a three-row tray replacement chart whose rows are cat icons rather than text, running 20-30 days, 10-15 days, then 7-10 days.
Can I use my usual litter in these boxes?
Not in the tray-based PetSafe systems. The ScoopFree Smart manual states that only PetSafe ScoopFree disposable crystal litter trays should be used, tells owners not to use clay, natural or other crystal litter, and warns that a different tray or litter may void the product warranty.
Have any automatic litter boxes been recalled?
Our searches of the CPSC recall web service on October 12, 2026 for litter box, cat litter and automatic litter each returned nothing. The only pet-bedding-adjacent notices in the database involve heated products and their power supplies, from 2010 and 2012.
