Metal is winning the pet aisle on search. In our Google Trends pull for cat litter box over the 12 months to October 12, 2026, stainless steel litter box is up 140 percent, stainless steel cat litter box 120 percent and metal cat litter box 120 percent. Amazon’s autocomplete says the same thing about bowls and fountains the same day: cat water fountain stainless steel, slow feeder dog bowls stainless steel, metal slow feeder dog bowl.
The input side moved in the opposite direction from the shopper. We have hand-typed no store prices. The figures here come from two Bureau of Labor Statistics series we pulled through the BLS public API, two Federal Register documents, and one CPSC recall notice. Where the Federal Register blocked our user agent we read the same documents on the Government Publishing Office mirror. Method: how we track trends.

Why shoppers switched to metal
The reasons buyers give are mundane and they show up in the qualifiers they type. Metal does not scratch into a surface that holds smell, it survives a dishwasher, and it does not warp. Across our pets pull, the metal qualifier attaches to three product types at once: bowls, water fountains and litter pans, which is what a materials preference looks like rather than a product fad.
It also moves those products into a cost base nobody shopping for a cat chose. A plastic pan tracks resin. A steel pan tracks steel, and steel has had an eventful 20 months.
A material preference across three product types is a stronger signal than one rising product.
What the steel input has done since January 2025
We pulled the BLS producer price index for iron and steel, series WPU101, through the BLS public API on October 12, 2026. It read 286.655 in January 2025 and 378.128 in August 2026, a reading BLS still flags as preliminary. That is a rise of 31.9 percent on our calculation, and 17.9 percent in the 12 months to August 2026 alone.
For context, the same series fell by 5.3, 11.4 and 10.8 percent in the August-to-August periods ending in 2022, 2023 and 2024, then turned up 8.5 percent in the year to August 2025. All of those are our calculations from the index levels, and together they put 2026 as the acceleration of a turn that began a year earlier rather than the start of one.
The consumer side has barely noticed. The CPI item for pets and pet products, series CUUR0000SERB01, read 239.441 in January 2025 and 245.522 in August 2026, up 2.5 percent, with 1.9 percent of it in the latest 12 months.
| Month | PPI iron and steel, WPU101 | CPI pets and pet products, SERB01 |
|---|---|---|
| January 2025 | 286.655 | 239.441 |
| August 2025 | 320.719 | 240.863 |
| January 2026 | 329.774 | 242.448 |
| August 2026 | 378.128 | 245.522 |
The tariff changed shape in April 2026
Two changes sit behind the input move. The first was scope. On August 19, 2025 the Bureau of Industry and Security published a notice adding 407 Harmonized Tariff Schedule codes to the list of products treated as steel or aluminum derivatives, effective for goods entered on or after 12:01 a.m. on August 18, 2025, with the duty assessed on the value of the metal content and the rest of the value left to other applicable tariffs.
The second was bigger. Proclamation 11021 of April 2, 2026 provides that from 12:01 a.m. on April 6, 2026 the Section 232 duty applies to the full customs value of the imported product, regardless of metal content, and sets the rate at 50 percent for steel and aluminum articles and the derivatives listed in its Annex I-A, with 25 percent for Annex I-B derivatives and lower rates for United Kingdom product and for derivatives made entirely from US metal.
Which codes sit in which annex we cannot tell you, because the annexes are published in the Federal Register as page images rather than as text. What we can report from the text we read is the structural change: a duty that used to apply to the steel inside a product now applies to the whole invoice. We traced the same mechanism in cans in canned food prices and in pans in kitchenware prices.
Why the shelf has not moved as much
Three things sit between the index and the price tag. Steel is a small share of the finished cost of a bowl once tooling, polishing, packaging and freight are added. Importers stocked ahead of announced dates. And a pet bowl is a repeat purchase at a low ticket, which is exactly the kind of item retailers hold at a round number for as long as they can.
Scope is the other reason to be careful. In the annex text of the August 2025 notice we read, the consumer-goods headings added include refrigerators, household washing machines, electrothermic appliances, seats and furniture parts. The heading that covers household articles of iron or steel, which is where a steel bowl classifies, is not among them.
Our read is that the pressure on metal pet gear in 2026 is mostly indirect: it arrives through the mill price and through whatever components do fall inside the derivative annexes, not through a line item aimed at pet bowls. That makes the retail lag plausible rather than suspicious, and it also means the lag can close quietly.
A 32 percent input move and a 2.5 percent retail move is a gap waiting to resolve, not a contradiction.
What to check on a metal bowl or pan
There is one clear precedent in the recall record and it is about finishing, not metal grade. On September 1, 2021 PetSmart recalled about 100,300 Top Paw Double Diner dog bowls after the gasket on the bottom could come off, leaving an unfinished edge and a laceration risk. The notice records three reports of cuts and scratches to consumers’ hands, and the product was made in India and sold from October 2017 through June 2021.
Read what the agency acted on: the hazard was to the person washing the bowl. On a metal bowl or litter pan, the edge is the part to inspect — whether the rim is rolled, whether a rubber base is bonded or merely pressed on, and whether the underside is finished at all.
The other practical check is weight and gauge. A thin pan rings, slides and dents; a heavier one stays put and survives a dishwasher cycle. Makers rarely publish gauge, so shipping weight for the stated capacity is the proxy worth comparing. Litter itself is the recurring cost, and we track it in cat litter prices.
What to watch next
- Monthly readings of BLS series WPU101, which is where any further input move shows up first
- Later Section 232 inclusions notices in the Federal Register, which is where household steel headings would appear
- The CPI item for pets and pet products, series CUUR0000SERB01, for the lag closing

Stainless steel pet bowl set
Where to look: Amazon
The 2021 PetSmart notice turned on a gasket coming off and exposing an unfinished edge. Inspect the underside and the rim before anything else.
- Survives hot cycles
- No surface to scratch open
- Slides without a bonded base
- Gauge is rarely published
Stainless steel litter pan
Where to look: Amazon
This is the product driving the rising queries. Compare interior length and shipping weight, since makers almost never publish steel gauge.
- No scratched surface to hold smell
- Heavier pans stay put
- Cold and loud
- Steel cost base is rising
Stainless steel pet water fountain
Where to look: Amazon
Most steel fountains are steel where the water sits and plastic where the motor is. Check which parts the listing actually describes as steel.
- Steel bowl is easy to clean
- Replaceable pumps are common
- Pump and filter housings are still plastic
- Filters recur

Questions readers ask
Have stainless steel pet products got more expensive in 2026?
The retail index has barely moved: BLS series CUUR0000SERB01, pets and pet products, rose 1.9 percent in the 12 months to August 2026 and 2.5 percent since January 2025. The input has moved much more, with the iron and steel producer price index up 31.9 percent over the same stretch on our calculation.
What changed about the steel tariff in April 2026?
Proclamation 11021 of April 2, 2026 provides that from 12:01 a.m. on April 6, 2026 the Section 232 duty applies to the full customs value of the imported product regardless of metal content, with the rate set at 50 percent for steel and aluminum articles and the derivatives in Annex I-A and 25 percent for those in Annex I-B.
Are pet bowls on the Section 232 derivative list?
We cannot confirm it. The August 19, 2025 notice added 407 HTSUS codes, and in the annex text we read the consumer headings include refrigerators, washing machines, electrothermic appliances, seats and furniture parts, but not the heading covering household articles of iron or steel. The April 2026 annexes are published as page images, so we did not read them.
